SPAN Society for Peoples' Awareness

SPAN came into being in 1989 working with the issues of children of migrant and displaced population; especially belong to STs, SCs and Minority groups. SPAN’s intervention area historically has been child rights and education. It also has been working to create an enabling situation in the community where people as informed citizen would participate in governance. That leads to change in the life of children, youth and women of the most poor and marginalized population who deprived from their rightful share of development. The basic premises on which the plan rests are 1)Vulnerability reduction, 2) Organisation building, and 3) Institutional Strengthening. Thus, empowerment process linking intersectoral aspects of vulnerability reduction based on organisation and leadership and transforming institutions based on education, rights & entitlement, climate action and livelihood will help reducing the vulnerability.

During the past 35 years the organisation could brought in thousands of out-of-school children in schools as well as able to provide skill training to hundreds of young adults and placed them in job sector. The organisation rescued and ensured school admission hundreds of children trafficked for labour. SPAN became part of the state and national level advocacy role being Convener and executive member of different National and State Civil Society forums such as Campaign Against Child Labour, National Right to Education forum and South Asian Initiative to End Violence Against Children.
