Gramya Vikash Mancha (GVM), a prominent voluntary organization dedicated to social development in the northeastern region, is located in the village of Kardaitola within the Pub Nalbari development block, situated in the Nalbari district of Assam. Established in 1999, GVM became officially registered under the Society Registration Act XXI of 1860 on September 14th, 2000. Initially, it commenced its operations in a small cluster of villages within the southeastern Nalbari area and gradually expanded its reach to various parts of the northeastern region. Presently, GVM is actively engaged in implementing socio-economic development initiatives across over 900 highly vulnerable villages spanning 11 districts in Assam.
GVM works closely with local administration to empower marginalized women and local leaders, promoting volunteerism and social change. GVM has unique models and teaching modules on critical social issues. As an active partner of regional, national, and international institutions, organizations, networks, and civil society coalitions, GVM has empowered vulnerable sections in Assam since 1999.
- GVM has restored natural water bodies and created diversion structures in lower Assam districts, enabling irrigation in over 1500 hectares of agricultural land and reducing vulnerabilities among marginalized farmers.
- GVM has worked with 35,000 farmers, restoring 10,000 hectares of cultivable land and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
- GVM has promoted livestock rearing on a commercial scale, benefiting 400 households in pig rearing, 200 households in duckery, 160 households in poultry farming, and 270 households in goat rearing.
- GVM has supported and strengthened 23 community-based organizations, including societies, cooperative societies, trusts, producer companies, and schools.
- GVM has actively collaborated with over 600 tribal weavers' women, preserving the traditional art of weaving in Nalbari and Baksa districts.
- GVM has established 16 community-based Adolescent Learning Centers (Knowledge Hubs) in Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, and Kamrup districts.
- GVM has formed and strengthened an Anti Human Trafficking Forum in Baksa District, BTR, Assam, to prevent child trafficking.
- GVM has rescued and rehabilitated 147 children from child marriages, child labor, and trafficking.
- GVM has ensured continued education for 1680 dropout children and bridged COVID learning gaps for 363 adolescent girls in Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, and Kamrup districts.
- GVM has provided counseling support to over 1500 children and adolescents, promoting a positive environment.
- GVM has implemented a Menstrual Hygiene program in Nalbari and Baksa Districts, educating adolescent girls and mothers to manage menstruation hygienically and eradicate superstitious beliefs.
- GVM has established two cloth pad stitching units, producing approximately 60,000 pieces of cloth pads and selling 40,000 pieces in Baksa and Nalbari Districts.
- GVM has rescued 21 illegally adopted and surrendered babies, promoting legal adoption of abandoned, orphaned, and surrendered children through its Specialized Adoption Agency.
- GVM has provided safe drinking water to over 5000 households through its Arsenic and Iron removal water treatment plant.
- GVM has supported flood-prone areas in Nalbari, Barpeta, and Kamrup districts by building raised platforms, installing raised tube wells, distributing floating toilet plates, and constructing semi-permanent shelters.
- GVM has constructed 100 household sanitary toilets to ensure sanitation in vulnerable Tribal and Adivasi-dominated households in Baksa District.
- GVM has constructed and renovated 65 sanitary toilets and urinals in government schools, ICDS centers, and hospitals in Baksa, Nalbari, and Kamrup rural districts.
- GVM has promoted over 3500 women as Internet SATHI, providing them with smart phones, tablets, backpacks, and power banks for digital and financial literacy.
- GVM has empowered 3000 adolescent girls in remote areas to act as peer educators, enhancing their social values, life skills, and emotional intelligence.
- GVM has supported the District Health Department in ensuring 100% immunization of children and institutional deliveries in Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, South Salmara, Karbi Anglong, and Kamrup districts.
- GVM has trained 1200 school teachers and 2100 students to enhance 21st-century skills in various government schools.
- GVM has supported 800 adolescents through the "Learning through Sport" program, addressing child trafficking, child labor, child marriage, substance abuse, and school dropout, while promoting them as peer educators.
- During the COVID lockdown, GVM has provided one month's worth of dry ration to 17,000 households and financial support to 3000 households.
- GVM has supported the local administration in low-performing blocks under six districts of Assam during the COVID vaccination drive, ensuring 100% vaccination in hard-to-reach areas by providing resources and assistance.
- During the Assam Flood 2022, GVM has supported approximately 42,000 households in flood-affected areas across different districts of Assam, providing essential items and relief assistance.
