Fundraising Trends in 2022

If the last two years have borne testimony to anything, it is the sheer resilience of the non-profit sector who not only adopted their programs to meet immediate needs that the pandemic brought forth but also, explored and implemented ways to adopt new trends especially in terms of fundraising. The pandemic gave rise to fundraising trends that are flexible, adaptive of new technology, engaging and hybrid.

Here are 5 of the latest fundraising trends to watch out for in 2022:

  1. Digitizing Donations: Nowadays, online payments have made life far easier. Paying your electricity bill, ordering groceries, food is all just one-click-of-a-button away. Why then should donations be far behind? With the ease that UPI payments and QR codes bring, nonprofits have started accepting donations online modes of payment; a far cry from the days when a bank transfer took nearly two days and often acted as a major challenge in the donation process. Digitizing donations have made it convenient and easy for the donor to make a donation. The cyber security and safety these payment apps afford also act as an added bonus and a compelling enough reason for the donor to use it to make donation.
  2. Ads on Social Media: Whether its importance stems from the constant need to be updated about the latest news, or the ease with which it allows connectivity and communication with the rest of the world, there is no denying that social media has made the world smaller and interconnected. For a non-profit organization, social media is one way to reach out to prospective and regular donors, to raise awareness about the cause they are working for and increase their credibility. Paid ads on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, third-party content platforms and Google, that follow appropriate geo-targeting, audience mapping and compelling message requirements help see a significant impact in the donor base and donations of the non-profit.
  3. Hybrid Events: The lockdowns over the last two years bore witness to a fact that most in-person events came to a screeching halt. However, much like everything else that slowly transitioned to being online, donor events also found their way to being held online. However, with the slow return to ‘normalcy’, hybrid donor events are the way of the future. Not only do these events spell donor convenience but also cut across national and international borders making it easier for patrons from across the world to join. They also allow in-person and virtual attendees to experience advances in tech.
  4. NFTs: NFTs or Non-Fungible Tokens are digital assets or commonly called crypto-asset. The most common iteration of NFTs is digital art. These assets are purchased and stored on a public blockchain and have one sole owner. The two ways NFTs have been used in fundraising are; selling the art at a profit, where the excess cryptocurrency received is then donated. The second way is by creating art that is then sold specifically to raise funds. For non-profits, NFTs can be one way of connecting the donor with the beneficiary by directly selling the art made by them. With the new transition to Web 3.0 and cryptocurrencies over the last year, NFTs are a trend that can prove to be beneficial for the nonprofit. In India, even though the legalities and implications surrounding fundraising using NFTs are still being discussed, it is good to be aware of the trend and the larger implications and advantages it will have for Indian NGOs.
  5. Artificial Intelligence: There is no denying that artificial intelligence has transformed and simplified a varied number of tasks for humans. For nonprofits, it has helped automate a large number of processes that overtime have proved to be time consuming, expensive and resource heavy. Overtime as AI has become affordable and easy to use, it has simplified important processes involved in key functions like fundraising. Whether it be identifying prospective donors using your CRM, personalizing email appeals, website pop-ups, segmenting donors; all processes that have further enhanced fundraising for nonprofits. Implementing and applying AI for an organization is imperative in 2022 not only being monetarily beneficial but also, cost effective.

The last two years have shown us the need to adapt to technology. The 5 fundraising trends of 2022 have shown that embracing technology and convenience are of prime importance for every non-profit.
