Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder that affects the red blood cells and reduces its capacity to carry oxygen to vital organs. The prevalence of this disease in India in general is around 9 %. However, according to a study by Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College in Raipur, Chhattishgarh, 10% of Chhattaisgarh’s population is affected by the diseases. The tribal population in the state, especially the Gond tribe are more disproportionately affected with at least 20% of the tribal population estimated to be affected by the disease. Every year the diseases claims the lives of around 10,000 children in Chhattishgarh.
The cure for the disease, only available in some cases, is costly and complicated. However, with early detection and regular treatment, it is possible for those who affected to live a long life. The symptoms of the disease are likely to appear in infants around 6 months to 2 years, although, with lack of awareness and medical facilities often children in tribal communities in Chhattisgarh are not diagnosed till much later. If left untreated, the disease is life threatening.
INDIAdonates’ on-ground partner, Jan Mitram Kalyan Samiti will work in 7 villages in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh to curb the increase of the disease and save lives. The project will help in early detection through screening and awareness building within the communities in 7 villages. The project will further facilitate proper treatment through referrals to government hospitals and support an estimated 120 families in providing long term care.
