Summary

The above quote is by Helen Keller, an American activist born in 1880. Keller lived with deafblindness, a disability denoted by hearing impairment and vision loss at the same time. In the above quote Keller is describing what she felt as a six-year-old when her teacher taught her a word through touch, for the first time, after living with deaf blindness since she was one.

People with Deafblindness, a disability that results in little to no sight along with little or no hearing, are relegated to a complete information blackout till they are, with great care, patience and thoroughness, taught to interpret the outside world using other senses.

It is estimated that in India there are more than 5,00,000 adults and children who are living with deaf-blindness. Children with deafblindness can often have a wide range of additional disabling conditions like speech impairment, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities. As a result, they face severe difficulties in communication, mobility, accessing information, learning, and education. This leads to isolation, social exclusion and affects all round development of the child. It can only be mitigated to special education thoroughly customized to each child’s needs and delivered on a one-to-one basis.

However, for children with deafblindness born into underprivileged and resource poor households, such early–childhood special education and rehabilitation program remains completely inaccessible. INDIAdonates’ partner, Kottayam Social Service Society aims to provide this access to learning, information and an education to 25 children with deafblindness in Kottayam and Alapuzha districts of Kerala. These children are between 3 to 14 years old from families dependent on daily wage labour and domestic work. Moreover, since the children require regular support and caregiving (usually provided by the mother), only one parent has the opportunity to earn a wage thus reducing the earning capacity of the family even further.

Under this project, special instructors will work with each child and their parents to create an Individualized Plan with quarterly goals.

The intervention will provide these children’s access to learning, information and an environment for growth. Currently, INDIAdonates is seeking funds for the next year.

Your contribution will ensure a better future for these extremely vulnerable children
