Summary

More and more children are losing the opportunity of meeting their peers, interactive sessions at schools and the overall learning capabilities as COVID-19 pushed for a sudden closure of more than 1.5 million schools across India. While private education players were quick to move to a digital platform with a comprehensible syllabi and daily interactions with teachers and friends, lakhs of students in rural areas faced the struggle of digital divide, with limited access to technology, or even adhering and retaining the digitized way of teaching. Many children across the hinterlands, are falling out due to monotony of intermittent breaks in studying and lack of enthusiasm of digital mode. However, as the disruptions due to pandemic becomes a part of our life, a hybrid approach is the only solution to savage the future of millions of students who are living on the fringes of the society.

To ensure that children are effectively engaged in learning and retaining, Masti Ki Pathshala is a supplementary program offering, designed by INDIAdonates partner, ‘People for Action’. The program aims to augment existing school syllabus, while schools remain shut, to mitigate the effects of COVID on the education of underprivileged children. This experiential program is a hybrid mix of digital and in-person course, and will reach approximately 4,00,000 public school students between grade 6 to 9, in Chhattisgarh.

Challenge

A United Nations (UN) report in August 2020 warned that prolonged school closure could result in 23.8 million additional children and youth (from pre-primary to tertiary) dropping out in 2021.

A substantial portion of school going children have been deprived of achieving their grade appropriate learning outcomes due to unavailability of smartphones and computers, unreliable internet connection (if at all), lack of technology skills, and lack of electricity.

With the devastation of the second wave and continuation of schools’ closure, the numbers are likely to deepen students’ vulnerability to child labour and early marriage in absence of regular schooling.

Solution

Priti Roy, a public school student out of physical school for the second consecutive year, recently attended a zoom-workshop on astronomy under the Masti-ki-Pathshala summer school program, implemented by our partner People for Action, on her father’s phone.

When asked what really caught her eyes during the workshop, she says,

“ I had no idea what supernovas are and why they get destroyed, what are white dwarfs but what really was interesting was the Stellarium app, how Sir pointed out Neptune, Uranus, and Jupiter which we can see at exactly 4:40 in the evening”.

Masti Ki Pathshala, a summer school program, will not only work at improving students’ learning outcomes but also work as a catalyst to keep students in ‘school’ keeping them engaged through online activities. Imparted digitally through the DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for School Education) platform of the Ministry of Education as well as on the ground, through community based organizations, the program involves 20 hours of engagement over 2 weeks at 2 hours per day.

In our constant endeavor to reach the most vulnerable communities we strive for holistic development for each and every individual. And while education might not be the focus area as we still battle with the pandemic, it is on its way to fracture the lives of thousands of youth who are being devoid of holistic education.
