Amongst the lush and vibrant tribal communities of Alluri Sitaram Raju and Parvathipuram Manyam districts in Andhra Pradesh, clean drinking water is a symbol of struggle and hardship. As the ancient traditions of the Adivasi people intertwine with the modern challenges of health and well-being, a pressing need for access to clean drinking water grips the community.
Sadly, this was a land where once open wells, ponds, and streams provided life-giving water. But now the same sources are tainted with danger and disease. The Adivasi population, bound by limited resources, faces a silent adversary in the form of waterborne illnesses like Jaundice, Typhoid, Cholera, and Dysentery. The very source of sustenance has become a source of suffering, casting a shadow over the community’s health and vitality. Moreover, the burden of collecting safe and clean drinking water from faraway places often fall on women and adolescent girls with consequences on their health and keeping them from education or workplace.
There are, however, stories of hope! Like the story of Ulli Nadipama. In the heart of Kothuru village, Ulli, a Konda Reddy tribe member, faced struggles with water scarcity. Contaminated wells and a distant stream brought illness and financial strain. Yet, she found a sustainable solution in MatiKalp Water Filters with the support of our on-ground partner LAYA. Un-burdened of the need to travel far for clean water every day, health and financial consequences of disease, Ulli transformed her family’s health and finances, inspiring her community.
