Summary

Lack of affordable childcare often works as a deterrent to women making an independent living. Especially in urban poor communities, lack of child care translates to depending on only one income source which is often not enough to sustain a living for a family in a city. Further, in a social context, many new parents struggle with the decision of whether to enrol their child in day care. Even though there are positive outcomes, it is frequently overshadowed by guilt as new parents consider leaving their infant for the first time in the care of a new caregiver.

In urban-poor communities, the livelihood implications of promoting day-care centers can be two-fold. Firstly, it provides the mothers (who are usually primary caregivers) the opportunity to earn a living and secondly through proper training and support it provides entrepreneurship opportunity to community members who would be running these day care centers .The foundation for the safety of children are accessible; subsidised and community run day-care centers. It makes it possible for parents like Shehnaz to provide for their families and give their kids a childhood where they can develop, learn, and play more freely.

In Shivaji Nagar, M East ward of Mumbai, Apnalaya has provided such a solution through distinctive social enterprise model known as Community Childcare Centers (CCC). The CCC model makes sure the women have the abilities and knowledge required to give the kids in their care a secure and engaging learning environment.

With your help, these 100 women will be able to gather resources for the child care centres and train more women to become a caretaker of a child, while their fathers and mothers are out there to earn a living for their kids. Today, we are sharing their story because they need your help. Your little contribution will provide economic opportunities to many women from a slum community.  Please donate!
