Summary

Autism is one of the most misunderstood conditions prevalent. The vulnerabilities experienced by students with autism and other disabilities and their parents go far beyond their physical and mental limitations. Not only there is a lack of quality services but also societal stigmas which lead to further isolation. Being unable to visit friends or interact with extended families due to an inherent lack of sensitivity towards those with autism and other disabilities, builds a community that is not aware of the presence of such families and students, nor is it willing to change.

Ashish Foundation for the Differently Abled Charitable Trust (AFDA) works with children and young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, it  was established in 2007. We believe that each individual has the ability and deserves the opportunity to contribute to society. They mentor families in meeting the specific needs of their children and also mentor several disabilities focused organisations across India and abroad & provide services to low-income communities living in West Delhi.

Solution

ASHISH aims to provide wholistic intervention to 24 students to take up valued Social Role in the society. They also provide high-quality services regardless of families’ ability to pay, and fill a significant gap in education, therapy and family support that is not widely available.

With this program proposal, increasing access to on-line learning during COVID-19, they are seeking to translate their services for students and families to the virtual learning environment.

With current restrictions in movement to public places, social learning skills imparted are limited to online activities to minimise the risk of infection amongst students. All skill training is now being conducted virtually with occasional meetings being held for peer get togethers, siblings meeting and for birthdays. This transition to virtual is also witnessing an active participation from family members who are equally involved in the skill development of their child.

Activities:

• Pre-vocational activities (Computer classes)

• 40 social learning activities in the year

• Training to use coffee/tea vending machine

• Training on job skills (Data entry)

Why People Support

Impact so far:

Last year two of our students were placed in jobs after the job training.  This year too, one student intern has taken up employment and one has joined for job training this month.  Hence, we would like to see more people with autism take up jobs and become independent. The ones employed are the sole earning members for their families, becoming a blessing to them.
