Sadayanodai Ilaingar Narpani Mandram (SINAM), INDIAdonates’ partner NGO in Tamil Nadu is working towards building back the bio-diversity and forest resources of the Eastern-Ghats of Tiruvannamalai district. The Eastern-Ghats in the Tiruvanamallai district of Tamil Nadu is home to a diverse and ecologically rich forest areas, a living lifeline to the flora and fauna. However, random urbanization, deforestation and exploitation of forest resources have led to severe loss in forest cover.
The current situation of the area is an alarming environmental crisis. Encroachment and illegal tree felling has depleted the green cover and the rich flora & fauna. In 2020 alone, Tiruvannamalai lost 4.14 thousand hectors of forest, more than 10% of its total forest cover. Rapid deforestation threatens the ecosystem, people, and wildlife.
SINAM will work towards protection and restoration of forest resources and regenerating forest cover with the help of the community living in 10 villages in the forest fringe areas. This project will strategically work to mitigate the issue by protecting existing forest land and re-forestation through mass plantation. This will be achieved through forming 10 protection committees in the 10 villages to monitor encroachment, illegal tree-felling to protect the forest cover. On the other hand, 100 women in the villages will be raising nursery which will help in mass plantation of over 70,000 saplings and planting over 55,000 seed-balls to regenerate forest cover. In total 1,25,000 trees will be planted to build back Green cover.
With a contribution of Rs 500, you can plant 100 trees and help replenish the forests of Eastern Ghat hills in Tamil Nadu.
