The lockdown is slowly easing in various parts of the country and as more and more people are likely to come out of their safe havens, masks are likely to become dearer. Community-Based Organisation/Self-Help-Group 'Gulaab' feels this shortage will adversely affect the vulnerable communities living in slums and settlements. To combat this rising shortage, 'Gulaab' aims to stitch cotton masks, to provide for 30,000 people in Madanpur Khadar, Delhi which houses almost 1 lakh people, living in a shanty and makeshift settlements.
GULAAB group consists of 14 members (primarily women), who are well versed with stitching, and will be working from their respective homes to maintain the norms of social distancing. Madanpur Khadar is a resettlement colony which houses daily wage earners from different parts of the country. With their modest living condition, many families lack basic sanitation, means to clean water, and hygiene. The initiative will not only help them with a vital instrument to fight COVID-19, but producing masks at a subsidized cost of Rs.10/mask will also provide an immediate livelihood to these women. Indiadonates, intends to empower Gulaab SHG, by providing them with an opportunity to buy good quality raw materials, to make the masks.
