In India thousands of children arrive alone or get separated from their family members at railway stations every year. Many of them have either lived in poverty or faced physical or sexual abuse at home. These vulnerable children, then, easily become soft target for human traffickers who are constantly in search of their prey at Railway Station. Eventually they become victims of severe forms of exploitation such as bonded labour, forced begging, or even, prostitution. This makes railway platforms one of the most dangerous spaces for lost, runaway and abandoned children across the country.
Railway Children India (RCI) in the last five years has successfully rescued more than 20,000 children from 35 railway stations across the country and, in collaboration with government child protection systems, reunited them with families. In the Delhi NCR region, RCI has been working at 4 railway stations, protecting lost and runaway children from traffickers. The work has now been expanded to Ghaziabad railway station where every month 35-40 children are found in need of protection and a safe-space.
INDIAdonates, along with its partner NGO, aims to provide these children with safety and a nurturing environment by equipping a child-friendly shelter home near Ghaziabad railway station in Uttar Pradesh. The shelter home will house approximately 500 children between the age of 6 to 18, in a year.
