Summary

The state of Assam is currently facing the devastating effects of the worst flood in over a century. Since heavy pre-monsoon rains first hit the region last month submerging large parts of the valley, unprecedented floods have affected millions in Assam and taken 135 lives so far. The situation in Silchar and surrounding areas in Cachar district is especially grim. The condition has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and give up their land and livelihood leading to hunger and starvation and risk of waterborne diseases. Further, many are still stuck, unable to escape the calamities yet and completely stranded.

Monsoon showers, ferocity of the rivers, breach of embankments leading to floods that displace residents is an annual reality in Assam, however, experts and affected people alike agree that this is the worst year yet!  Thousands of families are currently at the mercy of relief work for their survival.

The Barak Valley districts - Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj were severely hit by the rising water of the Barak and Kushiara rivers. Silchar town, district headquarters of Cachar and its surrounding area has been submerged for the last five days due to a breach in an embankment of river Barak. A total of 2,32,002 people have been affected by the flood in 565 villages in the Cachar district. Some communities are still 5 to 8 feet underwater. It's been challenging for rescuers and aid workers to get boats to many remote locations due to topography.

To combat this crisis and prevent starvation and water-borne diseases in displaced and stranded ultra-poor communities, INDIAdonates is working with its on-ground partner North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS) to provide emergency relief in terms of food kit and hygiene kit.

Considering the severity of the situation, a dry ration food kit as well as hygiene kit will be distributed to 1500 vulnerable families in the Lakhipur and Binnakandi Development blocks of Kachar district.

Please help us in reaching out to the victims of these cruel floods. Your one-time donation for a ration kit worth Rs 1670 can provide aid to the needful families awaiting some kind of hope.
