Paving the Path: Strengthen Primary Education in Morigaon

Summary

The foundation of children's future success lies in primary education. Recognized as a basic right by most nations, including ours, primary schooling plays a crucial role in fostering critical thinking, improving living standards, adapting to technological advancements, and instilling essential values and citizenship in children. It forms the cornerstone of their development. In Morigaon district of Assam, the literacy rate is 58.53% and a concerning trend of children opting out of mainstream education is observed. Children are engaging in livelihood-generating professions instead of continuing their education.

To ensure these children remain in mainstream education, INDIAdonates, in collaboration with its on-ground partner, Society for Social Transformation and Environment Protection (sStep), has taken the initiative of providing community-based learning in 8 hamlets of Morigaon district. Through this initiative foundational learning and numeracy training sessions are provided to 300 students from grades I to V. These trainings provide essential tools for comprehending texts, expressing ideas effectively, and grasping mathematical concepts, all essential to ensure retention of children in mainstream education.

Currently, 300 students attending the training sessions in 8 centers lack basic facilities such as whiteboards, notebooks, stationery, mats, and other learning materials. These resources are crucial for promoting better learning outcomes and facilitating foundational literacy and numeracy. Improved facilities not only enhance the learning environment but also inspire children to engage more actively in their education.
