Summary

Floods hit the state of Assam on June 19 2022 when the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries overflowed due to the heavy rains this monsoon. The sheer number of deaths brought on by the Assam floods this year is tragic, the tragedy is made even worse by the destruction of homes, crops, livestock, and farmland. Floods happen in the state every year, however this time they are particularly severe. The situation in some areas of Assam grew worse as 12 more fatalities were reported on June 29th, bringing the year's total number of deaths from floods and landslides to 151. The situation continues to have an impact on more than 31 lakh people. According to officials, many areas of Silchar town in Cachar have been underwater for more than eleven days.

Indigenous tribes like (Meitei) Manipuri, Bishnupuriya Manipuri, Dimasa (kachari) and Rongmei-Naga make up a significant population in the district of Cachar. The tribal communities mainly depend on agriculture and because of the recurrent floods in the Brahmaputra, their livelihood and ecosystem had been under utmost danger for a long time now. The severity of this year's floods have pushed them into desperation. Around 10 tribal hamlets, located in remote geographies in Cachar, are restricted to a meagre food ration that will soon run out. Relief measures so far have been inadequate in the face of mounting tragedy. If not given aid in the near future, families would be facing starvation.

To combat this crisis and prevent starvation in stranded tribal communities, INDIAdonates is working with its on-ground partner RNBA to provide emergency relief in terms of food ration kit to 248 households in 10 hamlets which will include:

This food relief kit will help the affected population to survive until larger and government run relief reaches them. Your one time donation of Rs 2000 can provide hunger relief to a single household in the Cachar District. Lets not unsee them. Please donate!
