Summary

Gaya district in Bihar, particularly its large forest areas and hilly terrains, have historically witnessed extreme poverty and lack of sustainable and secure livelihood for its residents. In resource-poor parts of the district, landless families involved in agricultural labour as well as families dependent on collecting forest resources to make a living are currently facing deepened vulnerability due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The continuous lockdowns, the fear of the virus, unavailability of jobs, loss of earning members of the family have resulted in a seemingly unending streak of loss of income and food-insecurity for a number of families in the region.

The danger of impending starvation hanging over a large portion of the population can only be mitigated with an immediate as well as sustainable source of secure income for the families.

INDIAdonates’ partner in the region, Jan Jagran Sansthan is working to create immediate livelihood solutions for youth from the poorest of the poor families that suffered severe economic loss in the pandemic, by training them to become security guards within two months.

Under the project, 45 young individuals within the age group of 18 to 25 (at least 60% of whom would be women) will be given two months’ training to work as security guards.

Your contribution of INR 11,300 can create a sustainable income source for one youth from a marginalized family and secure the family’s future.
