Fifteen-year-old Saba from Shivaji Nagar slum in Mumbai almost did not get a chance to continue her education beyond grade 10. After completing grade 10, Saba got the chance to pursue commerce, as was her dream, only at a junior college almost 15 kms away from her house. Her family was not ready to let her travel far from home every day and continue her studies. Saba however had been a part of the ‘School Saheli’ program run by INDIAdonates’ partner Apnalaya. Saba reached out to her ‘mentor’ from the program and together with Apnalaya staff, Saba’s ‘mentor’ was able to convince her father to let Saba continue her education.
Many girls from the Shivaji nagar community in Mumbai face similar situation like Saba but often with a different outcome. According to a situational analysis conducted by Apnalaya, 38% of girls drop out of school and get married before the age of 18.
Apnalaya wishes to deepen their ‘School Saheli’ intervention in Shivaji Nagar with adolescent girls by reaching out to 50 girls between the age group of 14 to 18 to ensure continuation of their education. The beneficiaries will be selected from the poorest of the poor families that are dependent on daily wage. The girls will be divided into 5 clusters. The project will provide a scholarship of Rs. 500 each month over the course of 10 months, to each of the 50 girls, conditional to them remaining in school.
Each cluster will be assigned a mentor. These mentors are women college students from the same community. The adolescent girls can look up to the mentors and the mentors can relate to the beneficiaries as they are from the same community and not significantly far apart in age. The mentors will receive capacity building trainings and will lead training and awareness sessions with their mentees.
The project will also incorporate awareness sessions with parents to change mindsets and inculcate the importance of girls’ education.
The project aims to provide many ‘Saba’s an equal opportunity for building a life for herself.
