Ensuring Quality Education for Girls from Tribal Communities in Jharkhand

INDIAdonates is working to improve the quality of education for girls from marginalized communities in Jharkhand, India. In partnership with Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra, we will be operating remedial classes for 150 girls in 5 government schools. These classes will be held before and after regular school hours and will focus on providing individualized attention and support to girls who are first-generation learners and behind in their studies.

Education is a powerful tool of social transformation. Quality and effective education provides underprivileged children an opportunity to break out of structural poverty. INDIAdonates along with its on-ground partner, Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK), aims to provide girls from tribal communities a fair chance at receiving quality education in the state of Jharkhand. In Chouparan block of Hazaribag district, girls from tribal communities are dependent on local government schools to receive education. These schools, with their limited infrastructure and inadequate number of teachers, often do not have the capacity to provide the holistic nurturing the girls are in need of. With there not being enough teachers, one teacher is responsible for too many students in the class and are unable to provide individual attention to most students who require it. This leads to girls from tribal communities, especially those who are first generation learners, falling back in age appropriate learning standards. This is especially true now after two years of school closure during which these girls could not keep up with their classes in a digital mode. Falling back in their studies and/or failing in their grades would mean early marriage and being involved in domestic duties for these girls negating their one chance at creating better future for themselves.

Through this project, INDIAdonates, along with its partner organization will operate remedial classes in 5 government schools of Chouparon block. These classes will be operational for one hour before school starts and after schools ends. The classes are meant for 150 girl children between grade 8 to 10 who are first generation learners and are currently behind in terms of age appropriate learning outcomes. Along with remedial classes the project will also hold meetings with the parents to build awareness on the importance of continuing education. The girls and their parents will be sensitized to aspire for higher education. Further, co-scholastic activities like quiz competition, debate, sports, painting and arts and crafts will be organized to provide a fun and enriching learning environment for the girls and to build soft skills and boost their confidence.

The objective is to keep these children involved in studies with individualized attention to improve their results which will motivate their parents to continue the girls’ education.
