In every girl’s heart lies a cherished dream- to be free, independent, and strong. Nurturing this dream ignites a fire within, empowering them to conquer challenges and shape their destinies. But for most girls in rural and resource poor communities, circumstances pose challenges in securing knowledge, skills and connections that can create income, and therefore financial freedom, for them.
Regular academic education is often not enough to create employable skills among students. The National Education Policy, 2020 also highlights the need for vocational training, alongside mainstream education, to create employability and income.
By offering adolescent girls and young women alternative pathways to success, empowering them with skills and the right linkages we can turn setbacks into stepping stones, and guide many girls toward a future of boundless possibilities.
INDIAdonates on-ground partner Service Initiative for Voluntary Action Trust (SIVA) is running a skill training program that seeks to train people interested in mastering the craft of tailoring with fundamental knowledge. The adolescent girls would get an opportunity to develop their creativity, explore business, and support the local economy by learning tailoring skills. The training will enable these girls to craft beautiful, professional pieces of clothes that will stand out as the course includes an advanced course in pattern making, alteration techniques & stitching with an emphasis on drafting, garment making, designing etc.
The project will primarily focus on adolescent girls and young women (between the age group of 17 to 25) in the 8 panchayats of Sarcarsamakulam block of Coimbatore district. About 40 women from underprivileged families will receive skill-training through this campaign. Along with the tailoring skill, these girls will receive training on digital literacy and basic soft skills. These additional courses will help them stand out from others in the tailoring business. These 40 young girls will receive crucial market linkage support. This will encompass connecting their unique products with local market and facilitating personalised orders for those seeking tailor- made clothing. They will be able to secure a sustainable source of income and carve out a space for themselves in the society.
Each stitch carries with it the power to mend not just clothes but broken dreams, restoring a sense of purpose and fulfilment to those who once felt lost.
